Mentoring

Life Story Mentoring: Heart Talk

Do you know your life and what you are really trying to do? What is the knowing that moves you? We may barely know our own lives and what we could be missing because often these questions have been answered for us and in such a way that the source of what we do no longer resides within us. It is possible that our achievements and productivity are constricting us and that we are causing ourselves discomfort when we are tied up with such a view of life. Nevertheless, we do ask larger questions and feel certain things when we are not trying to override the impulses that could evolve into a more generative story, whatever phase of life we are in. I have learnt from my students that there is a deep longing to express more of what we know and there is a self-recovery that is healing and hopeful when we are willing to be ourselves.

Some people are searching and no longer willing to enter a career if it comes at the cost of their self-expression, even if this means they lose the support of our culture. I have seen that these individuals find ways to inner resources and have important things to say. This knowledge attests to the presence of something deeper and what is going on in these lives is not only meaningful but also important. When this level of life is liberated and committed to re-forming consciousness, they feel truer to purpose and motivated to come into this world. There is tremendous moral courage in all of us, but we require relational support because this momentum has hardly been admitted and incorporated into language. The way we typically relate with each other limits our interactions so much that it does not enable essential things to happen.

Would you like to begin this work for yourself? I believe we can re-constitute our lives to a more complete and serious understanding, even in this age of biographical forgetfulness, but we must overcome our resistance to enter into and work with our whole lives. We need a mode that gives space to a different discourse in which we can share deeply and respect the principles that can also awaken a sense of the future. The Life Story Mentoring I am offering you is this opportunity to intentionally initiate this process and come into deeper attunement with your life. So much happens in one day, let alone when we have come to a crossroads, that we could easily miss ourselves. And that seems to be part of our education too, to overlook what is here. Yet I have been fortunate that my work has brought me together with a special group of people who no longer wanted to ignore the possibilities that stood to enlarge their psychology. Years of this work informed and deepened my understanding of mentorship. Our lives and what each of us needs will become clearer when we come together. We can take the first step tomorrow, whoever you are. What may come out of that first day?

“The road over which we journey, the wayside shelter in which we pause, are not pictures while yet we travel – they are too necessary, too obvious. When, however, before turning into the evening resthouse, we look back upon the cities, fields, rivers and hills which we have been through in Life’s morning, then, in the light of the passing day, are they pictures indeed. Thus, when my opportunity came, did I look back, and was engrossed.” – Rabindranath Tagore
